Fast Facts about the ISS

The first module of the International Space Station (ISS) was launched into space on November 20, 1998.

This first module was a Russian module called Zarya, which means dawn.

The ISS now has sixteen pressurized modules. These include five Russian modules, eight U.S. modules, two Japanese modules, and one European module.

It travels at around 17,500 miles per hour (28,000 kilometers per hour).

It completes an obit of the earth about every ninety minutes.
-
It’s average distance from the earth is about 240 miles (400 kilometers).
-
It has been continuously occupied since November of 2000.
-
Astronauts have grown vegetables such as red romaine lettuce in the ISS. They ate some of it too.
